Structural Logic Beneath the Lunar Form
A new project with Ballistic Architecture Machine (BAM)The Zizhu Science Residential Park in Shanghai, designed by BAM百安木, weaves scientific logic with everyday landscape life. At its heart is the “Super Moon” — a 26-meter self-supporting geodesic dome that frames communal space and light under the lunar cycle.
Inspired by China’s lunar calendar and the cultural ritual of moon-gazing, the dome isn’t just an object on the site. It is a place for gathering, extending daytime activities into the evening through its internal spatial field.
bespoke. Sur-Mesure Engineering Studio served as structural consultant for this central dome, focusing on:
- Translating conceptual geometry into a buildable form
- Rationalizing curved geometry for fabrication
- Structural concept and detailed engineering
- Fabrication-ready 3D structural modelling
The ambition was simple: ensure that a complex geometric vision could be built, installed, and sustained — safely, economically, and precisely.
In this project, the structure is not hidden infrastructure. It is the logic that enables imagination in the real world.
Our role ensured that the ambitious form could be realized in steel — safe, precise, and constructible — while preserving the design’s spatial and cultural intent.
